My friend just now referred me to a research that seems to be a very detailed and comprehensive about the Health 2.0 sector.
The report called E-Health 2.0.
You can purchase the full 108 pages report or try first to read the free executive summary.
quotation for describing the article :
"The report details how the application of web 2.0 technologies is now driving far-reaching changes in healthcare systems in the UK, USA and Europe, a trend it terms e-health 2.0."
Enjoy your time reading it.

"Open Health Education " - For school teachers and pupils and Health 2.0 in the service of teenagers
My second post today and its also on the "Open education" topic.
This time its for teachers and pupils. Excellent site helping both sides to learn and get access to educational materials.
The site called California Science from MacMillan/McGraw Hill. It contains materials, contents and activities in many aspects of science including life science and medicine /human body system.
My direct link is only to the activities/content thats belong to our sector.
You can find there :
slideshows
games
Animated summaries and quiz.
This site supposed to be designed for students at middle-school (fourteen-years-old) and below.
Science 2.0 or Health 2.0 has a potential even among teenagers/youths :
1. Open education sites
2. Educational games
3. Virtual reality games per se or as an educational tool.
4. Support communities and social networking for the "sick child or teenager" especially in chronic conditions ( for example : Diabetes , IBD etc.)

H2-02 : Scheduling Software for Medical Residents
H2-O2 is a medical residency scheduling tool.
The application gives end to end solution for those who are in charge of making the shifts calendar in every ward.
Shifts and calls for schedules can be created with one click using the Typical Week feature. Holidays and other circumstances can be adjusted around the regular shift and call times. Additionally, H2-O2 keeps track of requests for days off, visiting residents, minimum time required between shifts or calls, number of weekend calls or shifts, number of day shifts and nightshifts, and desired number of calls for each resident.
Automatic highlighting shows candidates who qualify for shifts—there’s also an instant pro and cons bubble which shows up before you add a resident to a particular shift. Mistakes are highlighted in red, while free personnel are indicated in green.
Should you make any mistakes entering dates or other data the program highlights the problem as soon as it is detected. That way you can correct it with no wasted time.
Its a sort of medical /health calendar 2.0
Looks it has the potential to bring some value to Sisyphean and even frustrating task.

Two steps barrier for reaching the crowd attention on the medical 2.0 sector
I want to share with you the attached review. Its about NPD survey which tried to understand and asses the popularity of classic health 2.0 sites . Google spreadsheet, for example.
The answer is defenitive. Most of the people have never heard about them. Ninety-four percent of U.S. consumers have never heard of Web-based productivity suite alternatives. A mere 0.5 percent have substituted Web-based productivity suites for desktop software such as Microsoft Office.
What we can learn from that concerning the health 2.0 sector? :
Its going to be long journey. We have to face with "two steps barrier" :
1. The attention barrier of the general public
2.The attention barrier of the professionals ( especially physicians and researchers).
Why is it "two steps"?
The answer is found in the history of technology/web.
Physicians by definition are "late adaptors".
Business developement strategy:
1. The sectors of the consumers are maybe more attractive for the short time.
2. To act and manage your medical 2.0 platforms ( for professionals) with deep breath (and maybe pocket) and ability for making strategic decisions whuch serves you for the long term.

Videos on- line in the service of medicine
Hello
Watch the attached article which described the arising trend of using the power of the video on-line for the service of practitioners
Physicians use video sharing sites like Youtube for sharing and spreading videos about their service as physicians ( mostly medical procedures).
Others are produce more complex and expensive videos for their own sites.
Mostly its for marketing and P.R but Im sure that the general public as well professionals will earn some high quality professional content . This will happen when the big hospitels will share some of their activities via on-line videos (surgeries, procedures, treatments etc.)

The other side of the "Health 2.0" trend - obstacle or opportunity
I was talking and wrote lately about the indications for what I called : " The Health 2.0 trend".
Indeed there is much more interest from the mainstream web 2.0 community towards the Health/medicine 2.0 niche.
But still most of our optional consumers ( both professionals and patients) are not aware of these applications on the net.
The best description I read lately about this subject was by Peter Beck in his blog .
Peter described well how most of the physicians are lacking basic knowledge and even interest on the current developement on the net.
Most of them are not using internet platforms for their education and professional knowledge. Others , most of the time, are using only traditionals platforms like searching via google, searching in medline etc.
By coincidence I disscused this situation with my partner and one of the Co-Founders of "Medical 2.0 Directory".
We are feeling the same way but for us its an opportunity not an obsstacle.
Im positively sure that the the number of users will grow more and more.
I believe that its not a matter of years but a matter of monthes.
Look where the general social networking such as Facebook is standing today comparing to last year. Today you can ask your neighbor if he has page on facebook.Maybe you will get a positive or a negative answer but surely he will not stare eyes on you.
Thats what I mean by "Health 2.0 trend". We are far away from this position, yet, but it soon to be come. This will be in two parallel vectors. The adoption of the health 2.0 applications by professionals as the adoption by consumers/patients.
Together they will create a major power in the web 2.0 world.
The early signs I mentioned lately are already here.
We, the early adaptors and the initiators of ventures in the field should feel like pioneers . We have vision and we have to move with it in front of our eyes.
This post can be understood somehow contradictory to the statement I wrote previousley- that we must be more criticized with the new ventures upcoming in our field.
Well, criticism will make our niche more grown up and developed in a faster way . By being more critical with ourselves we will be more suited when the small river will become to a stormy one.

Medicine 2.0 Carnival-New edition
I was thinking today that we are almost celebrating half a year for this carnival (Thanks to Bertalan Mesko , the Founder).
So many things are happaning in the world of health 2.0 . Many new ventures, many other S.U. It seems that this sector is becoming to be a mature one. One of the symptoms for that is so many posts all over the blogsphere that are dedicated to the content of medicine and web. By that fact , this blog carnival is becomung more and more important. Its more complicated but more challenging to give the right scope of "what happaned in the last two weeks in Health 2.0 world".Also we must to be more criticized and ask more questions regarding every new venture which appear to us every second morning.
I think that that we are close to a critical mass of Health 2.0 applications that offer service to professionals and or consumers by using a "traditional" components of web 2.0 ( amazing that some of the web 2.0 components already looks to us as traditional , not mention conservative). We are waiting to see and also contribute to the next generation of the health 2.0 ventures ( im sure they are on the way).
I hope you are dont dislike the fact Im using this stage for some opening sentences in the beginning. I want to offer to some of my friends and collegues to start more "friendly criticize" writing and discussion between us. I also think that C.E.O's in our field can contribute more and more to challenging dialoges.
And now to our carnival's content :
Constructive medicine 2.0 wrote a post that showing how big is the "wave" of medicine 2.0 in the web .He mentioned some example for that. Thanks Rahul for writing about my "meical 2.0 directory" while giving examples for your theme.
Dean Giustini from Open Medicine Blog wrote a post which summerize some aspects and direction who belongs to the "health 2.0 applications for the consumers".Its including the new service Zocdoc.com which gives the patients the ability to book appointments online.
My friend walter jessen from Highlight Health offered us review about the new Elseviers project for sharing knowledge with consumers, patients ands family members in the fields of biomedical and cancer research.
Its an opportunity to say : "happy birthday" to scienceroll.
Bertalan Mesko worked so hard this year and became one of the central players in the health 2.0 scene.
And as i mentioned his work through its blog I think its worth writing about is post about interesting material on other educational opportunities of Second Life.If you are reading his blog , Bertalan is offering us excellent reviews about the medical materials on this virtual world.
Another interesting post is about Facebook applications in science and medicine. Bertalan summerize for us interesting applications in the health 2.0 world on the big hype- Facebook.
David Rothman showed us some examples of the excellent Google's costum search engines for health information.
BBGM shared with us a cover of a new service started last october in Pubmed :
PubMed users will see links to a drug information resource on over two million citations. PubMed’s AbstractPlus display format includes links to “Patient Drug Information” from MedMaster™.
In Sciencebase there is an important and clever review about Yahoo pipes for scientists. What is Yahoo pipes?.Allow me to cited from the post :
"Yahoo Pipes is an interactive feed aggregator and manipulator. Pipes is a free online service that lets you remix popular feed types and create data mashups using a visual editor. You can use Pipes to run your own web projects, or publish and share your own web services without ever having to write a line of code.”
Microsoft's worldwild health director Bill Crounse, MD, wrote in his blog about the future and opportunities regarding mobile phones and medicine.Regarding my words at the beginning here is a new horizon for the health 2.0 sector.
In web 2.0 and medicine I found nice post dealing with the question : "Why is important to learn about web 2.0 and medicine?".
NEW BLOGS:
The health2blog.com is written and edited by the Co-Founders of the health 2.0 conference. Im sure its going to take central place in the nearest future.
Good luck.
Its important to mention their last post regarding web video series called The Digital Health Revoution.
Franky Dolan is the founder of medworm . She started lately writing a personal blog about the health 2.0 world. Its worth mention it for two reasons :
Im sure she has many wise things and ideas to write about them.
As an important contribuer by her medworm project/s.
SPECIAL APPLICATION REVIEW :
Maybe is the U.I maybe is the subject, or the magnificant design and graphics, I cant really put my finger on ,but it tooks my attention and I decided its worth to write about it to all of you in this carnival. I had a post about it in my blog and I already add it to Medical 2.0 directory but I recommend all of you to watch and see Visiblebody - the new platform for learning Anatomy by and through the web .
I hope you enjoyed reading this edition
Please, share with me your ideas and thoughts
Next edition is going to be in web 2.0 and medicine

Scirus topic pages - Scientist sharing their knowledge
Its more a science 2.0 platform than medical 2.0 platform but it has the potential to aggregate a strong professional content.
It is in the Beta phase and its still lack enough content but this is the "magic problem" of many others medical/health 2.0 platforms who are strongly depends on the users traffic and involvement.
Scirus topic pages :
Its contain two majors section :
1. Niche search engine ( There is already strong competition in this field)
2.Platform for collaboration and sharing for scientis. Its based on the concept of open access combined with a Wikis like platform.
Disadvantages :
Without focusing ( search engine , community/sharing platform)
Dont add something unique . Its looks like you see it or hear about it before.
Advantage:
Not so crowded yet (for scientists)

Carbonite.com- your on-line storage backup
Hi
Although its not an health/medical 2.0 tool and even not a classic web 2.0 tool, Carbonite.com is almost an essential one.
By Carbonite you can save some or all of the content that are saved in the hard drive. No more fears from technology disasters .
Yes, I know thats its not a new application. By technology scale its even old one, but on the other hand important one.
For doctors, researchers and other professionals in the medical fields its becoming essential. We are aggregating so many details, information, databases and knowledge (personal one) on the hard drives.
How much of that precious knowledge are we saving? . Probably a minority.
So, this is the answer why this platform is becoming to be part of the health 2.0 revolution. (You should know by now my state of mind regarding this revolution. We are already implemented it in our Medical 2.0 directory by adding general web 2.0 platforms to our lists because they are giving some kind of solution to physician and researchers in they work /professional activities).
BTW : the cost per a year is low and suitable for everyone

Medical 2.0- A new health 2.0 directory for all of you
Hi
I want to share with you a new platform called - Medical 2.0. ( I'm one of the founders)
Its a new platform/ service for physicians, researchers, other professionals in the fields of medicine and biological science .
Actually is for the service of every patient and consumers , so its for the benefit of everyone.
What is it about ? :
Its a directory that aggregate applications, platforms and websites that their content are on the fields of medicine and life science and they are based on web 2.0 tools.
We understand that we are in the beginning of a major change in the interaction between medicine and the net ( the web).
The new generation called web 2.0 gives a huge added value to the health sector.
We, by Medical 2.0 . com , will hope to create a gate to the health 2.0 worlds for professionals which already use these platforms but also for new adaptors.
So, we added until now a lot of platforms but its only the beginning.
We are planning to add more in the near future .(actually we will add more and more on a weekly basis).
We also be pleased to share your knowledge and exprience in the field and expose us with yours favourites platforms and application.
What is unique about medical 2.0:
1. establishing well developed aggregation tool in the field of health/medicine 2.0
2.Create a base for a future social networking through the experince of the platforms showed in medical 2.0.
3.Gives a detailed knowledge in the interaction between health, web 2.0 and consumers. It is so important that the doctors will be a broker between this world and the consumers. It will be a part from our duty for ours patients.
Physicians, researchers and other professionals in the field dont have a lot of free time to spent on the web and look after and for new applications.
We are intending to do it for them.
The directory is designed to have subjects that are specified in the medical and/or scientific fields ( example : medical video tools) and general subjects that we think that the platforms that mentiond on the top of them can create an added value for the professionals (examples : on- line office tools ).
Some of you who have a strong knowledge in the field will be familiar with some of the platforms. You must remember that the site is not just for the health 2.0 professionals. Our duty is to expose others to them ( although you will enjoy also from a central place makes such an aggregation).
We see this current phase as a beta phase so we will be glad to hear yours advise and comments.
Enjoy , Bookmark, Share with others, Spread the news.

The new age of the outpatients clinics
I want to inroduce you with a new concept and a new way of handling outpatient clinic.
Its about the clinic of DR. Jay Parkinson
He offers combination of traditional visits in his clinic with other communication possibilities through and by the web.
You can chat with your doctor regarding your physical condition. You can make with him video chats as well. You can maintain your connection with him by email as well. The others communication ways of visiting him can be done only after he knows you personally and i assume understand your current medical status.
So he is saving time and costs to his patients and for him too.
He is making his medical service more reachable to his patients.
I can offer him and can think about other applications that can be used by him as well:
1. I mentioned once the idea of using twitter application for patients with chronic illness.
2.Using an online calendar for the service of his patients.
3.Writing a blog for the service of his patients (writing posts about prevention, immunizations, medications and side efects etc.).
I know that he writes blog now but i mean to an educational blog in the service of his patients.
But we must understand not to forget our patients and not leaving the intimacy meetings far away from us.
Even today most of the interaction between us, the physicians, and our patients is happening with a middle broker - the computer. We must keep and save the central part of the "four eyes" meetings and discussions in the world of clinic medicine.

Labaction.com
I covered in the past some video tools for scientist and physicians.
Just for example : Scivee and Jove.
You know already my thoughts regarding the power and the future impacts of the media and the video abilities on the "health/medicine 2.0" world.
Here, I'm presenting another service called Labaction.
Its another video sharing tool. A niche tool for scientists and researcher.
In Labaction you can upload your own casts and see and view others webcasts. There is an option for making your own playlist and essential others web 2.0 tools such tags and etc.
Still they have problems :
1. The streaming is still suffering
2. The content for my opinion is not only top -notch scientific material.
3. Lack of content ( this is a matter of time....?)
My advice to them is to concentrate only in a top- notch content.
Researchers, physicians and scientists will not spent their precious free time in the evenings or even at work but only in a pure professional tools.
In The last pharse I mentioned one of the issues every health 2.0 web company must handle with : "keep on with pure and high professionality"

Social networks for patients
You know already my view regarding the importance and the central part of web 2.0 tools for the patients/consumers.
Transferring the knowledge in the field of health/medicine 2.0 to our patients is one of our missions.
Social networks for patient are part of these tools.
Here is a short review concerning these networks with several examples.
Note: It's not a full list, just good examples for this subject

GrandCentral - Control your phone world
Every one of us is facing with this situation ( or almost everyone):
We have several phone numbers (not including one or more email accounts and IM tools) .Some of them are currently working, some of them are old ones. We change work places, we change mobile phones and with them mobile phone numbers.
In the world of bussy sectors like the health sector I met so many people who have different phone numbers for different situations.
How many doctors do you know who have phone number especially for their outpatient clinic and different mobile phone number for their patients or mates/ residents at the hospital ( not mention, different number to their private life?).
How many of them want that different sectors will call at different hours via seperate roots? ( For example : someone who prefers all his hospital patients will call him only direct to his outpatient clinics phone while he is working there).
GrandCentral develops solution for these kind of situations.
The company was founded in 2006.The basic idea behind them is creating one phone number for everyone for life. This will be your public number.
By that single phone number you can control all your incoming and outcoming communications ( not mention that you dont have to update your numbers everytime you change home phone number or mobile number).
They are using VOIP technology to converage all your phone numbers to one point of contact.
You can choose that different phones will ring for different sectors or persons in different times. You can change it whenever you want. Its so easy to do it - just log in to yuor private account by the web.
You can control and manage your voice male either.
Now go back to the examples I wrote above and see how you can manage and control the different dimensions of your professional world and also keep some privacy for your own life and your family life.
Grand Central is a web service. Lately they where acquired by Google.
Yes, The phone market is taking his place in the web 2.0 world.
For me is also a very usefull medicine/health 2.0 tool because of its usability and necessity for the bussy professionals in the health sector and because phone communication is a key tool in our working enviroment. ( I still remember my nights phone calls to the words seniors as a junior ).
Still, you have to remember that this service is still in the beta phase.

Difussion of the " medicine 2.0 concept"
Interesting
Everything is probably coming in pairs
Here, I'm going to mention CDC again. This time is to introduce you with one of their latests posts :
Virtual Community Health Promotion by Richard Crespo, PhD
It's about the power of web communities in the service of health and medical issues.
The writer mentioned wikis, social networking and blogs. He also gives some examples and ideas how to use this concept.
For me it's another example and empiric data that the concepts of the medical 2.0 are becoming more and more popular and obvious to physicians, researchers and key leaders in the health sector.
Look and see the influance of this review by the eyes of another blogger in our sector:
"Web 2.0 - Do people in health get it?"
It's also a chance to introduce you with another blogger and blog ( good ones).
Enjoy
